Growth

Your growth hacking talents will help accelerate subscriber growth and retention through the delivery of experiments designed to identify 10X growth opportunities for the business. Content is at the centre of how we engage with our subscribers and quality content creation is a fundamental skill for this role in the growth team. As part of the growth team, you will formulate new ideas, create hypothesis to test and define experiments to run, all designed to drive user conversion, activation and engagement. You will have marketing experience and proven writing capabilities. You will use these skills to propose creative new projects designed to attract prospects and convert leads, then you will execute on the production of all the necessary content needed to deliver these projects effectively. You will be expected to generate high converting copy both online and offline across a range of media, including newsletters, websites, landing pages, social & paid advertising as well as writing blog articles and contributing to product marketing initiatives. You will be expected to deliver on the style and sound of the SMYL brand with all communications and you will play an active role in both tactical and strategic campaigns.

Your impact

  • Your first thirty days will be to get stuck in and start figuring out how to increase our growth rate by running at least a couple of experiments to completion
  • By month three, you’ll have lots of content out there and be well on the way to figuring out how to increase our growth multiplier
  • By month six, you will still be trying out new experiments after learning from the ones that didn’t hit the mark and those where we all danced for joy!

Your impact

  • Your first thirty days will be characterised by lots and lots of learning. You’ll get familiar with SMYL’s product development processes and tools, and you’ll take over one to two stories toward the end of your first month
  • By month three, you’ll be working with the product and engineering teams to ship and test new features in production
  • By month six, you will be influencing the feature and experiment backlogs, creating specs for new features, and working with designers and engineers to build and launch new features

The Opportunity

SMYL is looking for a hands-on Data Scientist. As a consumer Internet company, we produce huge amounts of data, and you will find the insights to make it actionable. You will have broad impact and exposure across SMYL, working with team members from our product, research, marketing, engineering, and finance teams.

What You Will Accomplish 

  • Within your first month, you will start developing a good understanding of the overall data processing pipeline, understand a subset of SMYL’s key metrics, and complete at least two small data reports and present to relevant business owners
  • By month three, you will become an expert user of our analytical tools, start contributing to the Data Science team’s projects, understand all of SMYL’s key metrics, and independently work on small to medium complexity data projects (including A/B tests, channel analysis, and user engagement)
  • By month six, you will begin working independently on complex data projects, such as user segmentation, short- and long-term user engagement analysis, and lifetime value projections
  • By year one, you will become the go-to person and subject-matter expert for a few of SMYL’s key metrics, own and drive projects independently with minimal supervision, and along with our other Data Scientist, ensure “data science excellence” at SMYL (dashboards, high quality reports, empowered teams, etc.)

Talents You Bring to the Team

  • Experience in data analysis, A/B testing, retention tracking, etc. (consumer product experience preferred)
  • Degree in statistics, math, physics, engineering, other quantitative field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient in data mining and statistics
  • Experience with SQL, and programming in Python, R, Scala or equivalent language
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and a strong bias toward actionable insights; love of finding insights and getting others to act on them
  • You are a self-starter with superior organisational and prioritisation skills

Engineering

The Team

Our Engineering Managers are responsible for building and managing teams of high-performing engineers. We’re looking for an ambitious Senior Analytical Linguist to build and lead a team of linguists.  At SMYL, we use a combination of machine learning, deep learning, and pattern-based methods to drive our high-quality writing feedback. Linguists are essential to improving the quality of our checks, developing training and evaluation sets for our statistical approaches, and conducting user experiments. The team you assemble will be the first of its kind at SMYL and is critical to driving our data-driven approaches.

  • Build and lead a team of analytical linguists who will support our NLP research and product teams
  • Develop long-term strategy and processes for our data and annotation needs
  • Work with product teams to improve the feedback we provide to our users

This is the right opportunity for you if

  • You have a Ph.D. in linguistics and at least three years of industry experience as an analytical linguist or in a closely related field, or a master’s in linguistics with at least five years of industry experience
  • You are a strong, collaborative leader who can build a team of linguists devoted to annotation, evaluation, and data quality
  • You have experience with research processes, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and experimental design
  • You have experience with scripting languages (preferably Python) in a Linux environment
  • You are able to speak and write English fluently and have a nuanced grasp of English communication and grammar

We are looking for a curious Senior Computational Linguist with an interest in Natural Language Processing, a passion for English, and excellent knowledge of English grammar.

What You Will Accomplish 

  • Use rule-based and statistical methods in NLP to develop and improve error-correction checks
  • Conduct research on a variety of tasks, work with large corpora, design algorithms, and implement solutions for new error-correction checks
  • Research different modes, genres, and styles of writing to improve SMYL’s performance
  • Improve current text processing tools and implement new ones
  • Coordinate development of corpora, including data extraction, annotation, and crowdsourced experiments
  • Coordinate resource-creation projects
  • Deepen knowledge and skills in NLP, and develop ML and DL skills, depending on career trajectory

Talents You Bring to the Team

  • MS or PhD in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or another Linguistics-related discipline
  • Fluent English, great understanding of English grammar, syntax, semantics, and usage, especially in writing
  • At least two years of industry and leadership experience in Computational Linguistics/NLP
  • Substantial experience in at least one programming language as well as working knowledge of NLP libraries and understanding of statistical methods in NLP
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Experience teaching English as a first or a second language preferred

The team

Our Customer Support Team provides timely, empathetic help that keeps the customer’s needs at the heart of every interaction. This role includes assistance in planning, installation, training, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrading, and disposal of a product.

We are looking for a highly motivated, goal-oriented individual to join our team. This person will be responsible for maintaining positive customer relations and satisfaction by providing service via email (helpdesk) and working with the rest of the SMYL teams.

Your impact

  • Provide full-time email and web chat support
  • Troubleshoot a variety of technical and non-technical issues, working with Tier 4 technical support and other teams
  • Provide customer support and address escalation issues via helpdesk
  • Help ensure that our service processes are scalable
  • Improve customer service procedures, policies, and standards
  • Meet time objectives and perform other job-related duties as assigned by management
